LEMON BALM (Melissa Officinalis)

Energetics: Cooling • Moistening • Aromatic • Gently uplifting

 Traditional Uses

 Nervous System Support:

Traditionally used as a mild nervine to calm tension, ease restlessness, and uplift the spirit. Known to “gladden the heart” and soothe melancholy or grief.

Digestive Relaxant:

Used to ease digestive discomfort, especially when related to stress, such as bloating, nervous stomach, or tension in the solar plexus

Mood Tonic:

Historically regarded as a mood-brightening herb, restoring joy and steadiness to the emotions. Paracelsus called it “the elixir of life.”

Mildly Cooling Remedy for Heat & Agitation:

Employed in traditional European medicine to cool excess heat, reduce mild fevers, and calm irritability or overstimulation.

Lemon balm was long called “the herb of cheerfulness.”

It embodies lightness, warmth, and renewal, helping the mind and heart return to calm after worry, grief, or overthinking.

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) has one of the strongest bodies of traditional and scientific support among Western herbs for herpes simplex ("HSV-1 & HSV-2") outbreaks.

For centuries, Lemon balm has been used externally and internally for so-called “viral skin eruptions,” cold sores, and shingles.

Energetically it’s cooling, aromatic, and dispersive, used to “clear heat and inflammation of the skin and nerves.”

Internally it was taken to calm the nerves and heart, supporting the emotional stress that can trigger outbreaks.

Modern Research Findings

  •  Multiple clinical trials in humans confirm its topical benefit:

    • A Melissa cream (1 % extract) applied 2–4 × daily to cold sores shortened healing time and reduced recurrence when used at the first tingling stage

    • Subjects also reported less pain, redness, and swelling.
